More than four years have passed since Spotify first revealed plans to introduce a high-fidelity, lossless audio streaming tier. While the feature has yet to be officially released, recent developments suggest it is still actively under development and possibly inching closer to a public launch.
Fresh clues discovered within Spotify’s desktop and mobile app code point to the existence of a “lossless” streaming option. These findings were shared by independent tech researchers who analyzed the latest version of the application. Among the references were help cards explaining what users can expect from the service and how to troubleshoot common issues.
One of the lines embedded in the code says, “Lossless music, now in premium,” highlighting a feature that allows music streaming in up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz quality the same level as CD-quality audio. Other tooltips mention that lossless playback may not be available for all songs or may be impacted by weak internet connections. The messages also recommend using wired devices or Spotify Connect for the best listening experience.
Mobile app updates also appear to support the theory that lossless streaming is on its way. A Reddit user spotted a new in-app description promoting “the best sound quality on Spotify,” with the same 24-bit/44.1 kHz reference, though the functionality remains disabled for now.
Despite these signals, Spotify has yet to provide a clear launch timeline. Over the years, similar leaks and interface references have emerged without any official release. Executives have remained vague in public statements, only hinting at upcoming premium features for dedicated music fans.
Most recently, the company’s top business executive reaffirmed that Spotify is exploring new premium offerings, including additional paid tiers designed to attract more enthusiastic listeners. However, no specific mention of a launch date was made.
Originally introduced under the name “Spotify HiFi” back in 2021, the lossless audio tier was meant to bring CD-quality sound to premium users. Spotify even conducted tests ahead of the official announcement but later cited licensing challenges as a primary reason for the delay.
Encouragingly, the platform has signed fresh licensing agreements in early 2025 with major music labels, potentially clearing the path for new features such as high-fidelity audio. Reports have also indicated that a new “Music Pro” tier, featuring high-quality streaming and advanced listening tools, could launch later this year.
As of now, Spotify has declined to comment on when or if the lossless tier will officially roll out. For Indian music lovers and audiophiles eagerly awaiting improved audio quality, the wait continues but the latest signs suggest it may not be in vain.
