Spotify has kicked off 2025 on a strong note, adding 5 million new premium subscribers globally in the first quarter alone (January–March), according to its latest earnings report. This marks a solid 12% jump compared to the same period last year and pushes Spotify’s total paying subscriber base to an impressive 268 million worldwide.
The streaming giant also posted record-breaking financials, reporting an operating income of €509 million (approximately ₹4,600 crore) and a revenue of €4.2 billion (around ₹38,000 crore) for the quarter. Spotify’s total monthly active users (MAUs) now stand at 678 million, which includes 423 million ad-supported free users.
Interestingly, when adding 423 million free users and 268 million premium users, the total reaches 691 million — slightly higher than the 678 million Spotify officially reports. This gap could be due to overlaps or reclassification of some user segments, though Spotify hasn’t clarified.
In India, Spotify has been steadily expanding its footprint since its launch in 2019. As of the latest estimates, Spotify India has crossed over 70 million monthly active users, making India one of Spotify’s fastest-growing markets. The company’s focus on offering regional content in languages like Hindi, Tamil, Punjabi, and Telugu, along with affordable subscription plans (starting from just ₹7/day for Premium Mini), has been key to its growth in the country.
Globally, despite facing criticism over artist payouts, Spotify continues to dominate the music streaming industry by a significant margin, ahead of rivals like Apple Music, Amazon Music, and YouTube Music.
With consistent user growth, a robust Indian audience, and strong financial results, Spotify appears well-positioned to continue leading the global audio streaming space.
