Gamers, get ready to buckle up! Nintendo has officially pulled the curtain back on Mario Kart World, its flagship launch title for the much-anticipated Nintendo Switch 2. The new installment in the beloved racing franchise was showcased during a special 17-minute Nintendo Direct, giving fans a glimpse of what’s to come when the game launches globally on June 5, the same day the new console hits the shelves.
Among the exciting new additions are fresh racetracks like the canal-themed Salty Salty Speedway and the haunting Boo Cinema, as well as reimagined classics cleverly integrated into a sprawling open-world environment—a first for the series.
What’s New in Gameplay?
Mario Kart World brings more than just racing thrills. Players can now dive into several modes including the Knockout Tour, an elimination-style competition. There’s also team-based racing with up to 12 players, time trials for solo enthusiasts, and iconic modes like Balloon Battle and Coin Runners, where collecting coins becomes the name of the game.
One of the standout mechanics is the Rewind feature—a clever tool that lets you reverse your kart for a short distance if you miss a jump or shortcut. Think of it as a second chance, but use it wisely; it won’t pause your rivals!
Expect to pull off charge jumps and wall rides, adding a dynamic flair to races. Power-ups have also received a refresh:
- Hammer Bro’s Hammers let you scatter obstacles for opponents.
- The Ice Flower can freeze rivals mid-race.
- A quirky new Coin Shell drops a trail of collectible coins.
- Fans will be happy to see the return of the nostalgic Feather, originally seen in the very first Super Mario Kart.
In a move that echoes open-world games like Forza Horizon, players can now explore the Mario Kart World map freely. While roaming, you can activate P Switches to trigger mini-games like time-based blue coin hunts. There’s also a photo mode and the ability to chat with friends during your adventures—assuming you’re using GameChat or a similar voice service.
One surprising addition is drive-thru food spots on the map. Grabbing a snack doesn’t just boost your kart—it unlocks themed outfits based on your meal. Sushi fans, for instance, can sport a traditional Japanese ensemble!
Nintendo has also included several assist features for beginners, including Smart Steering to keep you on track and tilt controls for a more immersive driving experience.
