Apple may be gearing up to introduce camera-equipped smartwatches, according to a new report. The tech giant is exploring ways to integrate cameras into both the Apple Watch Ultra and the standard Apple Watch series, potentially enabling users to scan objects around them for instant information. This move aligns with Apple’s broader artificial intelligence (AI) strategy, aiming to create AI-powered wearables capable of visual recognition and contextual awareness.
Visual Intelligence for Apple Watch
The report comes from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who shared details in his latest Power On newsletter. Apple’s AI-focused approach to its devices extends beyond the iPhone, with “Visual Intelligence” expected to play a key role in the next generation of Apple Watches. This feature, powered by Apple Intelligence, would allow users to identify objects, places, and possibly even text using the smartwatch camera.
For the Apple Watch Ultra, Apple is considering placing a camera between the digital crown and the side button, taking advantage of the Ultra’s thicker design. The standard Apple Watch models may feature a front-facing camera embedded in the display, similar to the iPhone’s front camera.
FaceTime on Apple Watch? Unlikely
While adding a camera to a smartwatch raises speculation about FaceTime capabilities, the report suggests this is unlikely. The small screen size and the need to hold the watch up for an extended period make video calling impractical. Although porting the FaceTime app to the watch is technically feasible, Gurman describes the idea as “far-fetched.”
Instead, Apple’s focus appears to be on AI-powered object recognition, allowing users to point their watch at an object for instant scanning. The Apple Watch Ultra’s design could make this feature even more advanced, while standard models may require users to flip their wrist to scan.
A Glimpse into Apple’s AI Future
Apple’s push into AI-driven wearables suggests that its smartwatches could become more than just health and fitness trackers. If implemented, a camera-equipped Apple Watch could enhance navigation, shopping, and real-world interactions by providing contextual information on demand.
