The Legend of Zelda loses its top spot after a day as Super Mario 64 has been sold off at an auction for $1.56 million on Sunday.

It is reported to be the first game console to be auctioned at a price more than $1 million. The version of the game dates back to 1996 and is known to have used 3D for the first time. The version was assessed to earn a score of 9.8 A++ and it is the highest score an old game could get. Super Mario is a popular game and has fans all over the world even now.

Earlier on Friday another auction had placed The Legend of Zelda at the top spot after it was sold for $870,000. Super Mario has managed to earn almost double the amount.

Auction house Heritage Auctions were in charge of both the auctions. Zelda was one of the best-known series by Nintendo, which was placed in an alternate magical universe. It incorporates action-based adventure and explorations in its game.

Information about both the buyers has not been disclosed.

The cartridge of Zelda dates back to 1987 and still comes in its original packaging. Before its auction the world record for the sale of a video game was $660,000 and was held by the Super Mario Bros.

It is interesting to find that people are highly nostalgic about these comparatively old video games.
