Spotify has for the time being has backed down from adding AirPlay 2 support to its iOS app. A Spotify representative has written on the community forms that they had internal discussions about the support and is working on developing a proper way but they have decided to stop working on it.
The representative has laid the blame on audio driver compatibility issues. These issues make it a much bigger project than expected and the team cannot finish it in a limited time frame.
AirPlay 2 was introduced by Apple as part of iOS 11.4. Apple had also enabled other music services on HomePod and HomePod mini. Engadget reported that Spotify had filed a complaint against Apple with the European Commission in 2019, for locking it. Spotify has not yet added native support for HomePod speakers but it can be played from the app with the help of Siri and users can also download Spotify tracks on Apple Watch.
Spotify can be connected to speakers and smart TVs through AirPlay or Spotify Connect. AirPlay 2 features like reduced latency, multi-room audio, and Siri control won’t be available to Spotify users for now.
