OpenAI has announced that it will acquire Statsig, a product testing and experimentation startup, in a massive $1.1 billion all-stock deal. This marks one of the largest acquisitions in the company’s history, reflecting its ambition to strengthen its applications business.
As part of the deal, Statsig’s founder and CEO Vijaye Raji will join OpenAI as the Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Applications, reporting to Fidji Simo, the former Instacart CEO who recently took charge of OpenAI’s Applications division. Raji will lead product engineering for ChatGPT, the AI coding assistant Codex, and other upcoming AI-driven tools. OpenAI believes that Statsig’s expertise in experimentation platforms will help accelerate innovation across its consumer and enterprise offerings.
This acquisition comes with significant leadership reshuffling at OpenAI. Kevin Weil, the company’s Chief Product Officer, will transition to lead a new unit called OpenAI for Science, aimed at building AI-powered tools to accelerate scientific discovery. Weil will collaborate closely with renowned AI researcher Sebastien Bubeck, formerly of Microsoft.
Meanwhile, Srinivas Narayanan, OpenAI’s head of engineering, will take on a new role as CTO of B2B Applications, working with COO Brad Lightcap to strengthen the company’s enterprise partnerships.
While Statsig will eventually integrate with OpenAI’s ecosystem, the startup will continue to operate independently from its Seattle office, serving its existing customer base. The deal, however, is still pending regulatory approvals.
For India’s growing tech community, this acquisition highlights how experimentation platforms and AI applications are becoming central to the next wave of digital innovation. With OpenAI scaling its global ambitions, such moves could pave the way for faster rollouts of AI-driven products across international markets, including India, where enterprise adoption of AI is rapidly gaining momentum.
