In a move aimed at simplifying the integration of AI chatbots on websites, Microsoft has introduced NLWeb — a new open-source tool designed to enable websites to create conversational experiences using minimal code and their own data.

Launched during Microsoft’s annual Build 2025 developer conference, NLWeb allows website owners to quickly embed a simple chat interface, such as a text input and submission button, powered by an AI model of their choice. For instance, an online fashion brand could deploy a chatbot to help customers select outfits for different occasions, while a food blog could offer a cooking assistant that recommends complementary dishes.

NLWeb also offers compatibility with MCP (Model Connection Protocol), a standard that allows AI platforms to securely access and interact with data stored on connected web systems. By supporting MCP, websites can opt to make their content easily discoverable and usable by AI tools, potentially expanding reach and functionality.

Microsoft compared the role of NLWeb to that of HTML in shaping the modern web, suggesting it could become a foundational tool for what it calls the “agentic web” — a future where users interact with web content through intelligent agents rather than traditional interfaces.

Although not officially confirmed, it is speculated that the concept behind NLWeb may have evolved from earlier collaborative efforts with OpenAI. Last year, early versions of similar chatbot technology were being tested with several major global brands, though rollout was delayed due to technical challenges.

With the launch of NLWeb, Microsoft now appears ready to deliver a practical tool that brings AI-powered conversational capabilities to a wide range of websites, making it easier for businesses — including those in India — to offer smart, personalized user experiences online.
