In a major technological leap, Lava and Human Mobile Devices (HMD) have announced plans to introduce feature phones with Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology. These innovative devices will be officially unveiled during the World Audio Visual and Entertainment Summit (WAVES) 2025, scheduled from May 1 to 4 at the Jio World Convention Centre, Mumbai.

Lava has confirmed it is ready with a new feature phone developed in collaboration with Tejas Networks. The device is powered by a MediaTek MT6261 SoC and an integrated SL3000 chip designed by Saankhya Labs. Key features include a 2.8-inch display, a robust 2,200mAh battery, and a built-in ultra-high frequency (UHF) antenna, allowing the phone to receive terrestrial TV broadcasts directly without an internet connection.

Meanwhile, HMD has also shared its intent to launch an affordable D2M-enabled feature phone. Although specific technical details are yet to be revealed, it has confirmed the use of the SL3000 chipset from Saankhya Labs to power its device.

What is D2M Technology?

Traditionally, streaming platforms like YouTube, Netflix, and Hotstar require an internet connection. However, Direct-to-Mobile (D2M) technology changes the game by enabling mobile devices to receive broadcast signals directly, similar to how FM radios work. This means users can stream live TV, sports, news, and more — without using mobile data or Wi-Fi.

Beyond entertainment, D2M has vital applications such as broadcasting emergency alerts, educational programs, and government communications directly to mobile devices. India has been actively testing D2M on live networks, led by Prasar Bharati, and the system is based on international ATSC 3.0 standards, adapted for the Indian market.

Why It Matters for India

Despite the booming smartphone market, India still has over 230 million feature phone users. For millions who cannot afford expensive smartphones or costly data plans, D2M-enabled feature phones offer a new gateway to digital content — live sports, entertainment, news, and alerts — without the need for the internet.

The collaboration between Lava, HMD, FreeStream, Sinclair, and Tejas Networks marks an important step towards democratizing digital access for all sections of the Indian population.
