Google Maps Introduces New Features and Android Auto Incident Reporting in India

Google has introduced new features for Maps tailored specifically for India, including long-awaited support for incident reports on Android Auto.

In a recent blog post, Google outlined six new features coming to Maps in India. These include “Flyover” routes, which are elevated roads designed to ease congestion. Maps will now show whether a route includes flyovers, informing drivers of these roads, which typically have fewer exits compared to main roads.

Additionally, Maps will use AI to indicate “narrow roads,” analyzing factors like satellite imagery and Street View. This data will help adjust routes based on whether the driver is using a two-wheel or four-wheel vehicle.

These features, developed specifically for India, will be available on Android and Android Auto in 40 cities this week, with iOS and CarPlay support to follow.

Furthermore, Google is expanding support for EV charging stations in India, now including two-wheel EVs. Maps will also support booking metro tickets through ONDC and Namma Yatri in Kochi and Chennai, and will curate “favorite spots” in local communities.

In a potentially global update, Google has streamlined road incident reporting to require fewer taps, with confirming another user’s report now only needing a single tap. This update is rolling out in India across all platforms—Android, iOS, CarPlay, and Android Auto. Despite previous delays, incident reporting on Android Auto is now available in India. If you experience this new functionality on Google Maps for Android Auto, let us know!
