Discord is introducing end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for audio and video calls across its platform. This new security feature will apply to calls made through direct messages (DMs), group DMs, voice channels, and Go Live streams. In a recent blog post, Discord explained the details of its E2EE technology and outlined its goals for enhancing user privacy. The encryption upgrade is already available on desktop and mobile clients, with full rollout to other platforms expected next year.
Discord emphasized its commitment to transparency by providing detailed information about its encryption protocols. The company assures users that E2EE will not compromise call quality. However, one key exception to the encryption applies to text messages, which will remain outside of E2EE coverage to allow for continued content moderation.
End-to-end encryption has become increasingly standard across digital communication platforms, with services like Signal, WhatsApp, and Zoom offering it as either a default feature or an optional setting for users.
