Anthropic, the company behind the AI assistant Claude, has begun rolling out a new “Voice Mode” feature in its mobile app. Still in beta, this voice feature allows users to engage in full spoken conversations with Claude—making interactions more natural and convenient, especially when multitasking.

The update was confirmed by Anthropic through its official X (formerly Twitter) handle and updated website. The feature will initially be available in English over the coming weeks.

One user reported gaining access to Voice Mode as early as Tuesday night. The technology is powered by Claude’s advanced Sonnet 4 model by default. According to Anthropic’s support page, Voice Mode lets you talk to Claude and hear it respond verbally, all while displaying key highlights of the conversation on your screen.

This hands-free feature is useful for users who are on the go or busy with other tasks, offering a smarter and more intuitive way to use AI.

Anthropic is joining a growing list of AI companies introducing similar capabilities. OpenAI offers voice chat with ChatGPT, while Google has Gemini Live, and Elon Musk’s xAI includes voice support in Grok. All aim to make chatbot conversations feel more human and responsive.

Claude’s Voice Mode stands out by allowing users to discuss not just text but also documents and images, choose from five different AI voice options, and switch effortlessly between voice and text input. At the end of each interaction, users get a transcript and summary of the conversation.

There are, however, a few limitations. Voice conversations are counted within the user’s standard usage limits. Free users can expect to have around 20–30 conversations. Premium users enjoy added perks, such as integration with Google Workspace—allowing Claude to access Gmail and Calendar via voice. Full integration with Google Docs is available only for Claude Enterprise customers.

Mike Krieger, Anthropic’s Chief Product Officer, had mentioned in an interview with the Financial Times earlier this year that voice capabilities were in development. The company was reportedly in talks with Amazon (its major partner) and AI audio startup ElevenLabs to enhance these features.

Whether those collaborations materialised is still unclear, but it’s evident that Anthropic is serious about giving users in India and across the globe a more interactive, hands-free AI experience.
