X, formerly known as Twitter, introduced audio and video calling functionality for iOS users in October 2023. Now, this feature is expanding to Android, as announced by X engineer @enriquebrgn in a recent post: “Audio and video calls on X are gradually rolling out for Android users today! Update your app and connect with your contacts.”
Linda Yaccarino, the CEO of X, had initially unveiled the video chat feature on the platform in August of the same year, as part of her and owner Elon Musk’s vision to develop an all-encompassing app. The premium perks, including audio and video calls, associated with this ambitious plan are primarily accessible to premium subscribers. However, the ability to receive calls is extended to all users, regardless of their subscription status. Subscribing to Musk’s vision comes at a cost of $8 per month or $84 annually.
For those who find satisfaction in WhatsApp, Zoom, Teams, and similar platforms, X provides an option to disable calls easily. Users can navigate to settings, select privacy and safety, and then go to direct messages. Within this section, there is an option to enable or disable audio and video calling, which can be switched off according to user preference. Additionally, users have the flexibility to control who can initiate calls to them on X. This control includes restrictions on individuals in their address book, verified users, and people they follow. These limitations serve as a useful tool to prevent unwanted calls, as the caller does not require access to the user’s phone number to make contact.
