Zapp Electric Vehicles aims to transform its London-based electric two-wheeler brand into a global EV company, with India as a key launchpad.

The company plans to debut its first product, an urban electric two-wheeler called the i300, in the UK as early as next month, followed by Thailand. Zapp is now including India in its expansion strategy, a significant market that will test its global ambitions, according to Zapp founder and CEO Swin Chatsuwan in an interview with tech magazine TechCrunch.

The Nasdaq-listed company expedited its plans for India after Chatsuwan recognized the country’s potential. As the world’s most populous nation, India not only sees millions of two-wheeler sales annually but is also the second-largest two-wheeler manufacturer globally, after China.

“We initially thought India would be phase two for us based on our research a few years ago, but we decided earlier this year that it can’t wait,” Chatsuwan said.

Zapp has partnered with Indian electric two-wheeler maker Bounce Electric 1 as its contract manufacturer to produce and sell the i300 locally. Following the homologation process, sales are expected to begin in 2025. Zapp aims for a minimum production capacity of 5,000 units per year in India, contributing to its broader global target of 25,000 units by 2026.
