British startup Hilo has recently launched the Hilo One, an innovative e-scooter designed to address the safety concerns surrounding the sector. Co-founded by Andy Palmer, a prominent figure known as the ‘godfather’ of electric vehicles (EVs), Hilo aims to revolutionize the industry with cutting-edge safety features.
The Hilo One incorporates advanced collision warning technology, similar to that found in cars. By utilizing computer vision AI, the e-scooter can detect potential hazards and promptly alert riders through visual, audible, and sensory feedback integrated into the handlebars. This proactive safety approach is intended to improve rider awareness and mitigate potential accidents.
Andy Palmer, who played a significant role in driving EV adoption as the former COO of Nissan and CEO of Aston Martin, acknowledges the safety challenges and public perception issues faced by e-scooters. He believes that the Hilo One directly confronts these concerns head-on.
To enhance stability and handling, the Hilo One features a large 31cm front wheel, specifically designed to navigate potholes and minimize the unstable maneuvering commonly experienced with other e-scooter models. Furthermore, the undercarriage of the scooter projects lights, improving visibility for riders during nighttime rides. These lights flash when other commuters approach dangerously close, ensuring heightened safety on the road. Additionally, the onboard computer is compatible with Unit 1 helmets and can detect their usage, further promoting safety protocols.
In addition to its safety-focused features, the Hilo One boasts a built-in control unit that seamlessly integrates with electric cars, enabling bidirectional sharing of navigation information and charging locations. This functionality proves particularly beneficial for EV drivers seeking a last-mile transportation solution to complement their vehicles.
Hilo’s commitment to safety and its innovative technological advancements position the Hilo One as a standout e-scooter in the market, aiming to transform the industry’s safety reputation and provide riders with a reliable and secure mode of transportation.
