HMD’s Barbie Phone, a novelty device tailored for fans of Y2K nostalgia and vibrant hot pink, now has pricing and release details. The Mattel-approved device, though a late tie-in to Greta Gerwig’s film, is set to launch in October—15 months after the movie’s theatrical release—priced at $129.

Developed by Human Mobile Devices (HMD), which holds the branding rights for Nokia phones, the Barbie Phone isn’t designed to replace your smartphone. Instead, it’s a retro-inspired flip phone with a T9 keyboard and no third-party apps, reminiscent of classic Nokia models. HMD promotes it as “the perfect tool to live your best life and take a break from your smartphone.”

While you won’t find social media apps on this device, it still allows for calls and texts. Upon powering it up, you’ll hear a cheerful “Hi Barbie” greeting before diving into Malibu Snake, a nostalgic nod to classic mobile games. The keypad, naturally in “Barbie pink,” features hidden designs like palm trees, hearts, and flamingos that glow in the dark, adding a playful touch.

The Barbie Phone includes a 5MP camera with a flash, capturing images with a distinctive Y2K aesthetic. It comes with two extra covers in addition to the default one. One cover pays homage to the bright swirls of the iconic 1992 Totally Hair Barbie doll, while the other features a shooting-heart design.

In the box, you’ll also find a pastel-beaded phone strap that can be customized with charms like a tiny roller skate or a Barbie doll-sized ice cream. Additionally, sparkly stick-on gems and retro vintage Barbie stickers (featuring flowers, flamingos, and rainbows) are included for personalizing the phone. It even comes with a pink USB-C charger.

The phone’s interface is Barbie-themed, boasting an easy-to-navigate design, along with themed wallpapers and app icons. Emphasizing its role as a retreat from the pressures of modern smartphones, the device includes a digital well-being app.

The Barbie Phone will be available starting October 1 for $129. It will be sold unlocked and compatible with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon networks. Pre-orders open on September 23 through HMD’s website.
