The latest evolution of the Qi wireless charging standard, now branded as Qi2 25W, is set to power a range of iPhones and select Android smartphones. This new version significantly boosts wireless charging performance, delivering up to 25 watts, a 66% improvement over its predecessor.
The updated naming, Qi2 25W, clearly reflects its enhanced charging capability, offering users faster and more efficient power delivery. According to the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), this upgrade is expected to drive greater adoption of wireless charging technology by improving user experience and compatibility.
iPhones already support the current Qi2 standard, so the shift to Qi2 25W is more of an incremental upgrade for Apple users. However, for Android devices – many of which have yet to gain official Qi2 certification this could mark a major turning point. Previously, Android phones required additional accessories, such as magnetic cases, to leverage Qi2 functionality.
Beyond smartphones, other gadgets like power banks and wireless chargers are also adopting Qi2 25W. The WPC noted that hundreds of devices are currently undergoing certification, following the official debut of this standard (previously referred to as Qi2.2) earlier this year.
Though it’s still unclear which Android models will be the first to receive Qi2 25W certification, the growing number of compatible devices signals broader industry support and an acceleration toward universal high-speed wireless charging.
