Meta is reportedly preparing to implement an artificial intelligence-based system to handle the majority of privacy and risk evaluations for updates rolled out across its platforms, including WhatsApp and Instagram.

According to internal information shared by a global media outlet, this AI-driven framework could be responsible for reviewing up to 90% of all product updates, replacing much of the current human-led process. This shift is part of Meta’s effort to streamline operations and speed up product development while maintaining compliance with global privacy standards.

A Response to Longstanding Regulatory Agreements

The move is tied to a long-standing agreement Meta (formerly Facebook) made with a regulatory body in 2012, which requires the company to carry out internal privacy reviews for new features and updates. Until now, these evaluations were conducted primarily by human reviewers, who examined potential risks to user data and privacy.

With the introduction of this AI system, product teams will fill out a structured questionnaire, after which the AI tool will generate near-instant decisions. These will include flagged risks and any conditions that need to be met before a new feature is approved for release.

Faster Updates, Higher Risk?

While the automation could significantly accelerate how quickly new updates reach users, not everyone is convinced it’s the safest route. A former company executive reportedly warned that relying heavily on AI increases the chance of overlooking unintended consequences. “When machines replace human judgment, the chances of early detection of negative impacts are reduced,” the executive is quoted as saying.

Meta Responds

Meta has responded to concerns by affirming its commitment to user safety and compliance. The company highlighted that it has invested over $8 billion in privacy initiatives and emphasized that both technology and human oversight will continue to play roles in its internal review process.

“As the nature of digital risks evolves, so must our tools and methods,” a Meta spokesperson explained. “We use AI to bring speed and consistency to low-risk scenarios, while our experts focus on more complex and sensitive cases.”

Relevance for Indian Users

For millions of users in India one of Meta’s largest markets this development could mean faster feature rollouts and updates across popular apps like Instagram and WhatsApp. However, it also raises questions about data safety and transparency, especially given India’s increasing focus on digital privacy and the upcoming implementation of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act.

As AI continues to reshape how tech companies manage compliance and innovation, Indian users and regulators alike may keep a close eye on how such automated systems perform in real-world scenarios.
