Google has purchased Skybox Imaging for $500 million in cash. Skybox is a satellite company that is claimed to have built and launched the world’s smallest high-resolution imaging satellite, which collects beautiful and useful images and video every day. The motive of Google behind this acquisition is to use Skybox’s technology to help it improve Internet access and disaster relief. Facebook is also working hard in this area with its Internet.org mission. This means that the competition between the two tech giants is not only in Earth but has reached space high.

Skybox was founded five years ago, with the goal of tracking changes happening across the surface of the earth. The deal isn’t closed yet and is subject to customary approvals and closing conditions. Check out few Skybox satellite videos after the break.
