Gmail users in India and worldwide using Google Workspace accounts will now see a helpful new feature on their mobile devices. When checking emails via the Gmail app on Android or iOS, users will automatically get a summary card for long email conversations, making it easier to catch up without scrolling through multiple replies.
This enhancement builds on Google’s previous efforts to integrate AI into its Workspace tools. Last year, the tech giant introduced AI-powered summaries across its productivity apps like Docs, Sheets, and Slides through its Gemini side panel. Until now, users had to manually tap “Summarize this email” to generate a condensed view of a conversation. With the new update, the summary will automatically appear at the top of any long email thread, giving users an instant overview.
How It Works
The built-in AI assistant identifies key points from multiple messages within a thread and compiles them into a short summary. This summary will continue to update in real-time as new replies are added to the conversation.
Currently, the auto-summary feature is available only for emails written in English. To use it, users must ensure that personalization settings and smart features are turned on in Gmail, Chat, and Meet, as well as across other Google Workspace services.
Availability and Future Expansion
At the moment, this feature is limited to Workspace accounts and mobile platforms. There’s no confirmation yet on whether it will be rolled out to Gmail desktop users or to those using personal Gmail accounts outside of Workspace. However, for users without auto-summaries, the manual “Summarize this email” button will still be available.
Smarter Gmail with Gemini AI
Beyond summaries, Gemini AI in Gmail also assists with email drafting and searching for relevant content across your inbox and Google Drive. At the recently held Google I/O 2025, CEO Sundar Pichai announced a new upcoming feature called Personalized Smart Replies. This tool will analyse your previous emails and documents to generate customised responses in your writing style and tone.
As AI continues to enhance communication tools, these features aim to save time and boost productivity, particularly for professionals managing busy inboxes on the go.
