Amazon lets out news of its new Kindle Paperwhite

According to Amazon listings found by some sources, Amazon may be getting ready to release a new edition of its Paperwhite reader, featuring a high-end “Signature Edition.” New Kindle Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition devices with 6.8-inch 300 ppi displays and 17 LEDs were shown in a comparison chart on Amazon’s Canadian and Mexican sites, which has since been withdrawn. In comparison, the current Paperwhite features a 6-inch display and only four LEDs.

Both variants are waterproof to IPX8, have a “flush-front design,” and look to have shorter side and top bezels than the previous model. They also offer an “adjustable warm light,” implying that they have both white and amber LEDs, similar to Amazon’s top-tier Kindle Oasis. The Signature Edition adds 32GB of storage to the Paperwhite 5, as well as wireless charging and auto-adjusting light sensors that adapt screen brightness based on ambient light.

The Paperwhite and Paperwhite Signature Edition are listed in Canada for CAD$150 and CAD$210 (about $117 and $165, respectively), but those prices could just be placeholders. The 8GB Kindle is currently $90, the 8GB Kindle Paperwhite is $130, and the 8GB Kindle Oasis is $250. If the new prices are correct, the Paperwhite will cost more, but it will have some of the features seen on the Oasis.
