Huawei and Chinese automaker GAC Group have teamed up to produce a smart SUV that is planned to come out in 2023. This will be the “first joint product of the two enterprises” as it is labelled. The companies claim that the SUV will have a level 4 autonomy and new energy capabilities.
The companies have divided roles in the development of the SUV. GAC will provide the chassis and Huawei will work on the computing and communication aspects. The team is expecting to bring out “eight models and multiple series” of electric vehicles.
GAC has earlier teamed with Didi in working on resource collection, data, and scientific research. Now Huawei will join this team in building ‘Level 4’ vehicles that can be used with no input from humans.
Didi has explained that “Combining resources from the three parties, intelligent L4 vehicles are planned to be mass-produced by 2024, utilizing GAC design and manufacturing capabilities and automatic driving software from Didi and Huawei. Didi’s intelligent hardware platform, Didi Gemini, is already being road-tested by several multinational car companies.”
Didi’s founder Cheng Wei is planning to produce one million autonomous vehicles by 2025.
