Zoomcar, India’s leading self-drive car rental platform, has disclosed a major data breach involving the personal information of at least 8.4 million users. The compromised data reportedly includes names, phone numbers, and vehicle registration details.

According to a regulatory filing submitted in the United States, the Bengaluru-based company detected unauthorized access to its systems on June 9. The breach came to light after several employees received messages from an individual claiming to have infiltrated the company’s databases.

Upon identifying the breach, Zoomcar immediately initiated its internal incident response strategy to assess and contain the situation. The company stated that, based on its current investigation, there is no indication that financial data, plaintext passwords, or other highly sensitive personal identifiers were accessed during the breach.

To enhance security and prevent future incidents, Zoomcar has implemented additional protective measures. These include strengthening cloud and internal network safeguards, increasing system monitoring, and revisiting access permissions. The company has also brought in independent cybersecurity professionals to support its response efforts.

Zoomcar mentioned that relevant government and legal authorities have been informed and that the company is fully cooperating with their investigations. However, it remains unclear whether the affected users have been directly notified or if the company has any confirmed information regarding the identity of the hacker.

Founded in 2013, Zoomcar offers flexible car rentals across hourly, daily, weekly, and monthly durations. With a presence in 99 cities and a fleet of over 25,000 vehicles, the company serves more than 10 million users. In addition to its Indian operations, Zoomcar is also active in international markets such as Egypt, Indonesia, and Vietnam.

Despite the breach, the company assured stakeholders that its core services remain unaffected. In recent financial updates, Zoomcar reported a 19% annual increase in bookings, reaching over 1 lakh rentals, while achieving a significant rise in contribution profit.

The company continues to monitor the situation closely and is expected to release further updates as the investigation progresses.
