WhatsApp has begun testing a new artificial intelligence (AI)-based feature that allows users to quickly summarize unread messages across personal chats, groups, and channels. The tool is designed to help users catch up on long conversations without having to scroll through every message individually.
Currently in limited rollout for Android beta users, the feature is part of WhatsApp’s broader effort to integrate AI-driven tools while maintaining its strong stance on user privacy.
According to early reports, the message summarization feature appears when users have a large number of unread messages. In place of the traditional “X unread messages” label, users will see a new button labeled “Summarize with Meta AI.” When tapped, it generates a short summary of recent messages, offering a quick overview of the conversation.
The feature is optional and can be enabled through a setting called Private Processing. WhatsApp has clarified that all message summaries are processed in a secure, isolated cloud environment. No message content is stored or linked to the user, and summaries are deleted immediately after use.
Additionally, WhatsApp has confirmed that the feature is automatically disabled in chats that use Advanced Privacy settings, reinforcing the platform’s commitment to end-to-end encryption and secure communication.
In parallel, WhatsApp is also developing another AI-powered tool named “Writing Help.” This feature will assist users in refining the tone and clarity of their messages before sending, and will similarly rely on private, cloud-based processing to ensure security.
As of now, the summarization feature is available to select Android beta users. The company has not yet announced a release date for iOS users, nor has it revealed details about language support or availability in different regions, including India.
With India being WhatsApp’s largest market, the introduction of AI features could enhance the user experience for millions, especially those managing high-volume chats or professional group discussions.
