The Rabbit R1, unveiled at CES, has unveiled the AI powerhouse behind its cutting-edge capabilities. San Francisco-based startup Perplexity, with aspirations to surpass Google in the AI realm and backed by notable investments from NVIDIA and Jeff Bezos, is set to drive the device’s interactions.
Priced at $199, the Rabbit R1, a creation of Teenage Engineering, promises up-to-date search results courtesy of Perplexity, all without the burden of a subscription. However, the first 100,000 R1 purchasers will enjoy a complimentary one-year subscription to Perplexity Pro, a service valued at $200. This premium offering includes features like file upload support, a daily quota of over 300 complex queries, and the option to switch to other AI models (GPT-4, Claude 2.1, or Gemini), although these may not be directly relevant to the R1’s use case.
In case you were wondering:
Today we announced that we will use Perplexity as one of our key LLM services for r1 – and r1 still does not require any subscription to benefit from this partnership.

Boasting a 2.88-inch touchscreen, a scroll wheel, two microphones, a speaker, a rotational camera, and a “Push-to-Talk” button, the Rabbit R1 is equipped for a variety of tasks. Leveraging its Large Action Model (LAM), the device can book rides, provide recipes based on available ingredients, identify people and objects (including items in your fridge), and fact-check. Notably, fact-checking relies on Perplexity’s real-time search engine. The R1 is currently open for pre-orders, with shipments expected in March or April.
