SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced the potential arrival of Starlink satellite Internet to India. He updated the status of the service on Twitter. SpaceX started Starlink as a programme to provide an internet connection with the help of satellites. The first satellites were launched back in February 2018. The service is currently available in countries like Australia, Canada, Chile, Portugal, UK, and the US.
As a reply to one of the Twitter user’s question, Musk said that the company is currently looking up the regulatory approval process. This means that his company is planning on expanding its market to India. However, there are no defined timelines on when this service will be available in India. We are also not sure how long the approval process will take.
Starlink exists as a beta version in places where it is currently available. Because it is a beta version there is no download limit now. The speed of the internet also varies from 50Mbps to 150Mbps. But the company claims a latency of 20ms to 40ms in all the locations. The company also claims that as more satellites are launched and more ground stations are installed, the efficiency of the service will rise rapidly. The low latency is attributed to the relatively lower position of the mini-satellites launched by the company. They are in Low Earth Orbit (LEO). The US FSC approval for 7,000 Starlink satellites was bagged by SpaceX in 2018. They faced many possible concerns but decided to go forward with the project.
In the Starlink kit, a Starlink dish, Wi-Fi router, power supply, cables, and mounting tripod are included. To connect, it needs a clear view of the sky and an app that is available both on iOS and Android for setting up and monitoring the service.
