The Sims, one of gaming’s most iconic franchises with over 500 million players, may soon be making its way to the big screen. Electronic Arts (EA) has announced that Amazon MGM Studios is developing a movie adaptation of the beloved game series.

Kate Herron, known for her work on “Loki” and “The Last of Us“, will direct the film and co-write the screenplay alongside Briony Redman (Doctor Who). Margot Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap, is also involved, aligning with EA’s ambition to create a cultural impact on par with films like Barbie, which is currently the 14th-highest-grossing movie of all time. According to EA Vice President and Sims General Manager Kate Gorman, the goal is to deliver a cinematic experience that resonates with fans who have deep affection and nostalgia for the franchise.

EA promises the film will feature plenty of Sims lore and Easter eggs for long-time players. Gorman hinted at the inclusion of well-known game elements, stating, “There will be Freezer Bunnies“. I’m sure a pool without a ladder is somewhere in there, but we haven’t finalized those details. The idea is to reflect the incredible play, creativity, and fun fans have had over the last 25 years.”

In addition to the movie announcement, EA shared updates on the future of The Sims franchise. While there are no immediate plans for a Sims 5 release, EA will continue supporting The Sims 4 with updates and paid expansions. The company is also launching a creator program, enabling players to sell custom in-game items through Creator Kits.

Beyond The Sims 4, EA is exploring new directions for the series, including Project Rene, a cross-platform multiplayer experience that has been in development for several years. An invite-only playtest for Project Rene is scheduled for this fall.
