Many movies are now shot with the help of virtual production. Virtual production has allowed the display giants to venture into a new purpose for their big screens. Sony’s modular crystal LEDs are used for shoots to give backgrounds. Samsung is also entering this arena with its partnership with CJ ENM, a major Korean movie and TV show producer.
The Wall, which is Samsung’s massive MicroLED TVs will be used for the studio’s virtual production facility in the upcoming branch in Paju. CJ ENM has also signed a deal with Epic Games to use its Unreal Engine game engine. This also provides virtual backgrounds.
With the increasing popularity of virtual production, the people in the industry hope that it will bring a considerable change in the amount spent on production. People look to save more by cutting the costs of crew travel and the making of physical sets and infrastructure when virtual production happens. Virtual production makes use of LED stages, game engines, and VR to bring in computer-generated backgrounds for a shoot. In less than five years, virtual production is expected to become the norm in the industry.
The Wall has the latest screens from Samsung which supports HDR10+ and has optimized frame rates. The screen is over 1000 inches and will support up to 16K high-resolution content. A new main display will be installed in CJ ENM’s new complex. CJ ENM has also acquired virtual production software maker Nurulize. This way the studio is slowly making its future into virtual production.
