Samsung Electronics, a global leader in advanced semiconductor technology, has announced that Hyundai Motor Company has selected its latest automotive processor, the Exynos Auto V920, to power their upcoming in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems expected to be launched by 2025. This collaboration marks Samsung’s first venture into automotive semiconductors with Hyundai Motor, a prominent player in the global mobility industry.

Jae Geol Pyee, Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, System LSI Business at Samsung Electronics, expressed excitement about the partnership, stating that it will further strengthen their position in the automotive infotainment sector. He also emphasized their commitment to creating cutting-edge automotive chip solutions that offer a safe and enjoyable mobility experience through close collaboration with global customers and ecosystem partners.

The Exynos Auto V920 represents Samsung’s third-generation automotive processor designed for advanced IVI systems. With significant enhancements in CPU, graphics, and neural processing capabilities, the V920 aims to deliver an optimal in-vehicle experience. It enables real-time display of critical driving information, seamless playback of graphics-intensive video content and games on multiple displays.

The V920 CPU is equipped with ten of Arm’s latest cores, specifically optimized for autonomous driving, resulting in 1.7 times greater processing performance compared to its predecessor. With support for high-speed LPDDR5 memory, the V920 efficiently manages up to six high-resolution displays for various systems within the vehicle, such as the dashboard, infotainment, and rear seat entertainment. It also handles up to 12 camera sensors responsible for capturing crucial visual data.

Notable advancements have been made in the graphics and artificial intelligence (AI) performance of the processor, enhancing visual presentation on displays and optimizing driver interaction with in-car information. The V920 integrates advanced GPU cores that deliver graphics processing capabilities up to twice as fast as the previous generation, enabling a rich graphical user interface (GUI).

The neural processing unit (NPU) in the V920 achieves 2.7 times greater performance than its predecessor, allowing for enhanced driver monitoring features. These features enable better detection of the driver’s state and swift assessment of the surrounding environment, ultimately creating a safer driving environment.

In terms of safety, the V920 incorporates an embedded safety island that complies with Automotive Safety Integrity Level B (ASIL-B) requirements. This safety island detects and manages faults in real-time, ensuring the security and reliability of the IVI system.
