With the Nintendo Switch, you can finally use wireless headphones and earbuds. The gaming behemoth has discreetly disclosed on Twitter that a software update has been released that allows the Switch to pair with Bluetooth devices for audio output. Following the update, you’ll see a new Bluetooth Audio section in Settings, as well as a new status indication that indicates whether or not a pair of headphones is connected.
However, the new feature is only compatible with devices that output audio and do not accept microphone input through Bluetooth. When using Bluetooth audio, you can only pair your Switch with two controllers at a time, so if you want to engage in crazy eight-player combat with buddies, you’ll have to unplug your device. While the system may store up to ten Bluetooth devices, only one can connect to the console at any given time. Furthermore, when playing local wireless multiplayer games, you can’t use wireless headphones or earbuds since Switch would automatically disconnect you.
Since the Switch’s inception, wireless audio has been noticeably absent. Several third-party manufacturers have created accessories that support wireless audio devices throughout the years, and a prior upgrade included support for USB headphones as well. This update, on the other hand, will ultimately make going wireless a lot easier, as it will allow you to link your Bluetooth earphone to all of your other devices.
