Meta has introduced a new video editing application named Edits, aimed at digital creators who regularly produce short-form video content. Positioned as a direct competitor to CapCut a widely used editing tool developed by ByteDance Edits brings a suite of creative tools to Instagram-linked users.

The release comes at a time when uncertainty surrounds the availability of Chinese-origin apps in Western markets. While CapCut is currently accessible again in the U.S., Meta appears to be preparing for a future where apps like CapCut may face restrictions. The launch of Edits could allow Meta to fill that potential void.

Getting Started with Edits

The Edits app is now available for download on both Android and iOS platforms. Upon launching the app, users are prompted to sign in using their Instagram account.

The interface includes five main sections:

Edits comes equipped with several powerful tools that cater to both beginners and advanced content creators:

How Does Edits Compare to CapCut?

Although both apps offer a range of features for video creation, CapCut currently has an edge in terms of advanced editing capabilities and AI tools, as it’s been in the market longer. Additionally, CapCut boasts a broader music selection and includes a desktop version, whereas Edits is currently mobile-only.

One significant difference is the pricing model. While CapCut includes premium features behind a subscription, Edits is completely free to use for now. Meta has hinted that future updates may introduce paid features.

What This Means for Indian Creators

India’s growing community of content creators particularly on platforms like Instagram Reels may find Edits to be a convenient, all-in-one mobile solution. As it integrates directly with Instagram, it streamlines the content creation process without relying on third-party tools. With Meta actively improving the app, Indian creators can expect more powerful features in the near future.

Edits may not yet match CapCut in every aspect, but it offers a promising start for those looking for a native and simplified video editing experience tied directly to their social media profiles.
