Elon Musk’s platform, X, is set to trial a new approach within its Community Notes feature aiming not just to fact-check, but also to spotlight posts that resonate across different ideological lines.

The initiative, announced through X’s Community Notes handle, introduces a pilot program where select contributors will be invited to assess popular posts. Instead of a typical like or dislike system, contributors will answer questions about why they feel positively or negatively toward a particular post. This move is intended to surface content that garners appreciation from users with varied perspectives.

Unlike traditional upvote/downvote systems, which are vulnerable to manipulation by groups with similar views, Community Notes uses a “bridging algorithm.” This method highlights notes that receive agreement from contributors with typically opposing opinions. Only when this cross-perspective consensus is achieved is a note made visible to the wider audience.

While the fact-checking aspect of Community Notes has faced criticism for its pace and scale, the underlying model which emphasizes agreement between different viewpoints has influenced other tech companies in their own efforts to address misinformation.

Now, X is extending that same collaborative philosophy to content discovery. In this pilot phase, a small group of Community Notes contributors will see prompts asking for their input on trending posts that are attracting significant engagement. Their feedback will help X determine if a post is broadly appealing across the ideological spectrum.

According to X, this experiment aims to explore and highlight the kind of ideas, thoughts, and conversations that unite rather than divide. A statement from the platform emphasized, “People often feel the world is divided, yet Community Notes shows people can agree, even on contentious topics. This new experimental feature aims to reveal insights that bridge perspectives.”

As with previous Community Notes developments, X plans to build this feature publicly through a limited test, refining it through real-time user input.
