Global cryptocurrency exchange Binance has raised an alert about the increasing threat of Clipper malware, which targets crypto wallet addresses during transactions. This malware hijacks wallet addresses, redirecting funds to attackers’ accounts. In response, Binance has introduced enhanced security measures and shared vital tips to help users safeguard their assets.
Clipper malware operates by intercepting wallet addresses stored on devices’ clipboards and replacing them with fraudulent ones. During a cryptocurrency transaction, if a user copies and pastes a wallet address, the malware swaps it with an attacker’s address, leading to stolen funds.
In a blog post, Binance highlighted a surge in Clipper malware infections since August 27, particularly spread through unofficial apps and plugins on Android and web platforms. Although iOS users are less frequently affected, they are still advised to remain cautious.
“The malware is typically distributed through unofficial apps and plugins, especially on Android and web applications,” Binance noted, urging users to be vigilant when downloading software from unverified sources to protect their crypto wallets.
Binance Strengthens Security to Combat Clipper Malware
To counter this threat, Binance has strengthened its security measures, including blacklisting wallet addresses linked to Clipper malware. These actions have blocked several fraudulent withdrawals. The company has also informed impacted users and provided guidance on how to safeguard their accounts.
Binance has recommended key security practices, such as verifying the authenticity of all cryptocurrency-related software and using reliable security tools to detect threats. Users are also urged to triple-check wallet addresses before finalizing any transactions, as Clipper malware manipulates addresses during the transfer process.
Additionally, Binance advises users to download apps only from official sources and verify their legitimacy before installation. “Exercise caution when searching for software in your native language or through unofficial channels,” Binance cautioned.
