Since its introduction in 2015, Apple’s basic Watch design has remained virtually untouched, but that’s about to change. Apple Watch Series 7 features a new (if long-rumored) more seamless design, as well as larger 41mm and 45mm casings with larger, brighter, and more durable screens to match. A wider range of metal colours is also available. With additional information and new watch faces like Contour, Modular Duo, and World Timer, the upgrade makes advantage of the larger displays.
The Series 7 is the first Apple Watch to have an IP6X dust resistance rating, making it more suitable for mountain hiking or going to the beach. The screen itself is more crack-resistant thanks to improved geometry that is thicker, and it still has WR50 (50-meter) water resistance. You won’t confuse this with a robust watch, but after a tumble, you might not be as concerned.
Under the hood, the changes aren’t quite as aggressive. During workouts, you can expect 33 percent faster charging and fall detection. The majority of the upgrades come via watchOS 8, which now supports cycling workout detection, improved tracking for e-bikes, and assistance if you fall off. You’ll also receive a full swipe-based keyboard, support for new workouts (including Pilates and Tai Chi), and sleep breathing rate tracking.
The Apple Watch Series 7 will be available this fall, with a starting price of $399. The Apple Watch SE and Series 3 will remain at their current prices of $299 and $199, respectively, and the Series 7 will receive new Nike and Hermès models. Although it isn’t as noticeable as some had hoped, it is a more palpable upgrade than Series 6 and may still be worth it if you want additional visual real estate on your wrist.
